Nederland kent nationale landschappen; gebieden met internationaal zeldzame of unieke nationaal kenmerkende landschapskwaliteiten. Het Langbroekerweteringgebied, waar het landgoed Sterkenburg gelegen is, maakt deel uit van zo'n nationaal landschap. Wellicht verdient dit gebied plaatsing op de Werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco.
Niet alleen het mooie landschap maakt deze plek uniek, ook de karakteristieke en monumentale gebouwen maken Sterkenburg tot wat het is. Omgeven door koetshuis, tuinmanshuis en een prachtig park en tuin, vindt u de kern van het landgoed: kasteel Sterkenburg. Dit kasteel, de bijgebouwen en de landelijke omgeving creëren de perfecte ambiance voor een onvergetelijke ervaring. Sterkenburg plaatst zich met het bieden van gelegenheid voor evenementen en ontvangsten goed in de ontvangsttraditie die kastelen en buitenplaatsen al eeuwenlang hebben en ook, op hedendaagse wijze, moeten behouden.
Sterkenburg castle was built in the 13th century by the knights of Wulven, the first Lords of Sterkenburg, as an actual stronghold (the name Sterkenburg meaning “sterke burcht” or “strong castle”) defending the episcopate of Utrecht. The castle is the magnificent centre of the Sterkenburg estate and stands out especially because of the high, characteristic medieval round tower. The protected parts of the estate include this castle, the coach house, the gardener’s house, garden walls, gardens and park. The estate is an organically grown complex and over the centuries, it evolved to the stately and delightful country estate it is nowadays. Between 1848 and 1867, the last major alterations took place, giving the castle and the outbuildings its present appearance.
The recent large-scale renovation, instigated by the foundation Stichting Behoud Sterkenburg, aims to revive the former glory of the estate, based on the situation around 1850, when Sterkenburg experienced one of its heydays. Meanwhile, the renovation of the 19th century garden walls and of the 18th century gardener’s house have been completed, as well as the 18th century coach house, which burnt out in 1976 and subsequently was in a ruinous state. The restoration of the castle itself is much more challenging. The interior, having suffered during the last century, has been restored with attention for the original details, such as 18th and 19th century marble chimneys, stucco ceilings and marble paneling. The renovation of the outside of the castle have been phased out, at this point the square tower on the Westside of the castle is being restored top down.
By ways of a suitable and durable exploitation of the estate, the Sterkenburg foundation tries to raise funds for the further restoration and, of course, the conservation and preservation of the monumental castle, outbuildings, gardens and park. In earlier days, Sterkenburg could maintain itself very well by receiving rent from tenants, the levy of toll or the selling of timber from the surrounding forests. In present times, these revenues are no longer existing. Therefore, Sterkenburg opens its doors for, by example, marriage ceremonies (the castle even has its own charming chapel in the tower), board meetings, seminars, assemblies and, last but not least, bed & breakfast.
